Starting from a brief overview of earth observation technologies and methodologies based, the tutorial will focus on some approaches to archeology and to issues related to the protection, conservation and monitoring of heritage through the processing and analysis of , active and passive remote sensing data (from satellite to drone), including with the use of Big data analysis and machine learning methods.
In the second part, the tutorial will focus on an application, providing the necessary data processing tools, in order to reapply them on other test sites.
Nicola Masini is currently CNR Research Director and Deputy Director of CNR-ISPC.
Since 1993 has been developing his scientific activity along three main research lines including Remote sensing methods in Archaeology and non-invasive sensing technologies and sciences for Architectural and Archaeological heritage conservation, authoring and co-authoring around 400 scientific publications among which papers in international journals. chapters and volumes.
He is currently also Director of the Italian Archaeogeophysics and Heritage Conservation Mission (ITACA) in Peru, Editor in Chief and co-founder of Heritage, Professor of Fundamentals of Restoration in the School of Architecture at University of Basilicata in Matera and Ancient building systems and Restoration at Master of Archaeology of Matera.
He directed several scientific missions in Italy, Peru, China, Bolivia, Colombia.
He has been responsible for IBAM-CNR and ISPC-CNR of several national and international projects on Cultural Heritage management among which ByJeriNetAthena, GeoMop, Heritage Within, and bilateral projects in China, Spain, and Colombia.
He has obtained several awards and recognitions including the President's International Fellowship Initiative of Chinese Acadey of Sciences in 2016, Choice Magazine Award in 2017 by American Library Association for the volume " Ancient Nasca World. New Insights from Science and Archeology", Certificate of public merit of the first class - Gold Medal of the National Civil Protection in 2010 and several best paper awards in conferences such as RSCy 2013, EGU 2011, EGU 2012, EGU 2013.
