Fabio Bruno is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical, Energetics and Management Engineering (DIMEG), University of Calabria (UNICAL). He is cofounder of 2 spin-off companies: 3D Research s.r.l. and Tech4Sea s.r.l.. His research interests include the development of new technologies and systems for the documentation, preservation and exploitation of underwater cultural heritage. He is currently in charge of the UNICAL and 3D Research teams in four European projects: INTERREG MED – BLUEMED; EASME - “Underwater Cultural Route in Classical Antiquity”; H2020 iMARECULTURE; EASME Lab4Dive “Mobile Smart Lab for augmented Archaeological Dives”. He has been the principal investigator of the national project "VISAS – Virtual and augmented exploitation of Submerged Archaeological Sites". He has been in charge of the DIMEG Research Unit in several national projects like: “ITACA - Innovative Tools for cultural heritage ArChiving and restorAtion” and COMAS "Planned in Situ Preservation of Underwater Archaeological Artifacts". He is co-author of more than 90 scientific papers.

Fabio Menna received a PhD in 2009 in Photogrammetry from Parthenope University of Naples, Italy and since 2011 is a product researcher at the 3D Optical Metrology unit – 3DOM (http://3dom.fbk.eu) of the Bruno Kessler Foundation (http://www.fbk.eu) in Trento, Italy. His research activities concern the design of new 3D imaging systems based on photogrammetry for applications in the cultural heritage documentation, industrial metrology, and underwater photogrammetry. He has been in charge for the design and implementation of several reality-based 3D digitization and modeling projects in the cultural heritage field and responsible for the underwater photogrammetric acquisition in different industrial measurement projects such as the underwater photogrammetry survey of the main leak of the Costa Concordia cruise ship. He served as secretary of ISPRS Technical Commission V (2012-2016) and is currently acting as chair of WGII/9 “Underwater Data Acquisition and Processing” (http://www2.isprs.org/commissions/comm2/wg9.html). Organizer of the first ISPRS/CIPA workshop “Underwater 3D Recording and Modeling”, he authored over 50 scientific publications and tutored more than 20 summer schools and tutorials.

 

Abstract

The Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH) represents a vast historical and scientific resource of highest importance for understanding the development of human civilization and, as a consequence, a fundamental and essential source for the upbringing and education of the next human generations. During the last few years, there has been growing interest for the development of efficient techniques and systems in the underwater research area, to face the challenges and problems in archaeological prospection, documentation, monitoring, and data gathering. 3D survey techniques, in particular, offer many opportunities for archaeological investigation and documentation of underwater cultural heritage, thanks to the possibility to de-materialize the tangible heritage, so that it can be virtually accessed, studied and enjoyed without the constraint given by the marine environment. This special session gathers contributions related to techniques, methods, sensors and systems used for surveying, digitizing, documenting and monitoring underwater cultural heritage.

 

Topics include, but are not limited to:

• Underwater 3D data acquisition and processing
• Underwater Photogrammetry
• Geometric calibration, color correction and validation of systems for underwater 3D measurements
• Image enhancement and correction for underwater digital recording
• Acoustic sensing for large underwater areas: data acquisition, processing and management
• Sensor and data fusion in underwater applications
